After much debate and research, I settled on taking a Nikkor 20mm F2.8 N out for a test drive on my D700. For years I’ve run with a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 on my previous D300. Since moving on to FX, my Sigma 10-20mm can no longer serve my needs and thus I sold it to a good friend. Initially I’ve regarded 20mm as somewhat boring, on a DX it becomes the equivalent of 35mm which is fine, but on FX it becomes an ultra wide angle. I was quite surprised by just how different it behaves on an FX. That said, it’s still not quite wide enough to fill the shoes my Sigma 10-20 left empty. The Nikkor 14mm F2.8 was definitely tempting, but for a lens I rarely use, the price tag just wasn’t justifiable, yet.
I’ll revise this post as I get closer to this lens. From the few shots I’ve taken with it I’m generally happy, but it’s still not quite as exciting as a 14mm or 12mm.
